HOW TO REMOVE OXIDATION FROM FASHION JEWELRY?
Over time, costume jewelry tends to oxidize . Nothing serious, this phenomenon is completely normal. All it takes is a little maintenance and a good cleaning to make your most beautiful costume jewelry last.
There are many solutions for cleaning your costume jewelry . But, first of all, prevention is better than cure! Before using major means, a simple daily routine is essential:
- Remove your costume jewelry before applying cosmetic products to your skin, using household products or playing sports. Sweating, skin acidity, extreme heat, perfume and makeup can alter their color and radiance. If you use creams or perfume, wait until they are dry before wearing your costume jewelry.
- Avoid contact with water as much as possible, whether washing your hands, showering or swimming.
- Storing them in a suitable place is absolutely necessary for the longevity of your jewelry. Separate them and put them carefully in boxes or cases... to avoid friction or tangling, and keep them in a dry and temperate place. Ban places that are too humid like the bathroom.
Next, you have to recognize the materials: do you know what your jewelry is made of? : silver, gemstone, brass, gold plated, stainless steel, mother-of-pearl... Depending on their composition, they are not cleaned in the same way. Be careful when treating costume jewelry adorned with natural stone, some of them are porous.
HOW TO CLEAN FASHION JEWELRY THAT IS DARKENING?
1 - A DAMP MICROFIBER CLOTH
It is the gentlest and safest solution to restore shine and luster to your most delicate costume jewelry. Gently rub your costume jewelry with a soft cloth, such as chamois, to remove black stains and traces of dirt.
Very effective on jewelry with mother-of-pearl, gemstones, natural pearls and/or crystals , which do not like overly aggressive chemical solutions and do not appreciate contact with water.
Remember to do this regularly on all your jewelry to remove dust, it can't do them any harm!
2 - SOAPY WATER
Fill a container with lukewarm water and add a few drops of Marseille soap. Let your jewelry soak for a few minutes in this soapy water solution. Then, gently scrub hard-to-reach areas using a soft-bristled toothbrush (you can also use a toothpick or cotton swab). Finally rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry with a soft cloth.
You will be delighted with the result on jewelry in gold filled (rolled gold), gold plated , mother-of -pearl , stainless steel or silver . It is also an effective method for resin jewelry, micro-macramé and glass beads or synthetic beads .
3 - BAKING SODA
Using baking soda can be extremely effective against black marks without damaging your costume jewelry. Create a paste by mixing the baking soda with water. Apply it to your jewelry and rub gently with a soft cloth. Then rinse them with clean water and dry them with a soft cloth.
For use on jewelry made with silver or stainless steel , gold plated jewelry .
4 - WHITE VINEGAR OR LEMON JUICE
Soak for about fifteen minutes in a container filled with lemon juice, diluted in water or 2 hours in a reasonable quantity of white vinegar. Rinse thoroughly with clean water, then dry with a soft cloth.
This method is ideal for making silver jewelry shine without rubbing.
5 - TOOTHPASTE
Gently scrub your jewelry using a soft-bristled toothbrush (or a soft cloth) with a touch of toothpaste. Don't forget to rinse with plenty of clean water and dry with a soft cloth!
